In the spirit of community service, Hewlett-Packard (HP) had generously sponsored the term 4 outing to the Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC).
The students of Pathlight School were greatly entertained by the exhibitions. But it was not just fun and games, it was a learning experience too.
The volunteers from HP were assigned to every class and facilitated as guides at the SDC. It was a good opportunity for them to interact with our autistic students and to get a first hand experience on what ASD is about.
They seemed to be at ease when talking to the students and even said that our kids were not very different from the mainstream ones.
Our students could not wait to enter the SDC, although there was a delay and change of schedule, most of our students took to the change well. They participated in the tour and were really excited to try the exhibits.
Some exhibitions were more sought after than others, Visionarium and Little George the robot, really got the students hyped up. Teachers also got into the action of designing the future of Singapore at the Visionarium. Little George was the star attraction, the students were so fascinated that they could just ask any questions and get a response. Also, he sang his favourite song ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ just for Pathlighters.
Pathligters were also treated to ‘Adrenaline Rush’ a movie by iIWERKS Theatre, the largest flat-screen, 5-storeys high showcasing 2D and 3D movies. Students were treated to a true cinematic experience as a large part of the movie was taken by the point-of-view of the skydivers and base jumpers themselves.
The SDC is a good mix of interactive and informative exhibitions. It gave the students a better idea on the past, present and future of Singapore, a good tie in with the National Education. They take classroom learning outside the textbook and align it with the youth culture of today.
It will be beneficial for parents to take their children there during the holidays, as time did not permit us to stay very long at each exhibit.
The outing was a good experience to work with the volunteers from HP.
It was also a great success thanks to the teachers who did a systematic job as all of us had a great time at the SDC.
