Whatever age you are, you are never too young to have a business sense. And the P6 students of Pathlight did their bid for the new Pathlight School building fund by setting up pushcarts stalls.
The motivation behind the pushcarts is to inculcate project skills and work cohesiveness when running a business.
“The students were really excited when they got to handle money,” said Ms Raji, one of the primary 6 teachers.
Our students, being ASD need schedules to go through the processes of handling the carts. Of course, teachers are there to supervise the transactions.
The two stalls sell snacks and drinks, which are favourites of students such as potato chips, “Mamee”, cheese balls etc.
The stalls also sell bubbles. A lot of students got really excited when they blew bubbles and had their friends running after them.
Running a business also gave the students a sense of pride.
“I must be polite because I’m a cashier,” said Moses a P6 student from Sycamore.
Ms Loy and Mrs Chai are the suppliers for the pushcarts, they have to top up on any of the items that run low.
The students are involved at all stages of the business from planning right up to making the sale. And at the end of the day, they have gained money sense, customer service and presentation skills.
Setting up the pushcarts got the students thinking of setting up their own business someday and that is an indicator that they have benefited from this experience.
