CONGRATULATIONS TO SYAFIQ BIN SHAMSUDIN ON WINNING 2 AWARDS

9 June 2011

Our heartfelt congratulations to Syafiq Bin Shamsudin, our alumni student from our 2010 Secondary 4 Balsa class for winning two awards for his amazing invention – the ‘Ashwell Shape Chart’!

The Ashwell Shape Chart is an easy to use, interactive chart that gives instantaneous status on the state of health of the individual. All they need to do is turn the wheel of the chart to achieve the height of the user and move the slider to show the waist size and the lighted LED will indicate the status of the individual’s health.

For this invention, Syafiq was awarded the following awards:

1) Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Award 2011 – Commendation Award (Student Section)

Out of 1 200 entries received for the Tan Kah Kee Young Inventors’ Awards, only 65 awards were given out this year. The Award, which is in its 25th year this year, recognizes inventions that would encourage people to think and to invent things that would bring economic benefits to the country.

Syafiq’s work clinched the Commendation Award in the Student Section. His invention, together with the other award-winning entries, was exhibited for one week from 29 May 2011 to 4 June 2011 at the Singapore Science Centre.

2) D&T Awards 2011

Syafiq’s Ashwell Shape Chart also received the Creative Invention Award with Special Mention at the D&T Awards 2011!

This year, out of 90 shortlisted entries, only 44 entries from 29 schools were selected for the award.

Syafiq was presented with the award at the D&T Awards 2011 Presentation Ceremony held at Tanjong Katong Secondary School on Thursday, 2 June 2011. It is a commendable achievement as Syafiq was the only SPED student who was presented with the award.

Thank you all teachers who have supported and guided Syafiq in one way or another. We are extremely proud of his achievement and hope that this can inspire Pathlighters to reach for greater heights!
